Heavy Protests in Zamfra Over Kidnap of Five Varsity Students
Hundred of students of the Federal University Gusau in Zamfara State have blocked the Gusau-Kaduna road to protest the abduction of five students of the university.
Five students of the institution were reportedly abducted by bandits last Friday night, a situation which has angered the students to block the road as a result of which several motorists were left stranded for several hours.
Efforts by the security agents to disperse the students proved abortive as many of them sat on the main road, calling on the appropriate authorities to take urgent action on the security situation in the institution.
The Vice Chancellor of the institution, Professor Muazu Abubakar who was at the scene of the incident appealed to the protesting students to allow motorists to pass through the road but they refused to listen to his plea.
Professor Muazu assured the students that efforts would be made by the institution to ensure adequate security in the institution, but the students insisted that they would not go anywhere.
At the time of filing this report, hundreds of vehicles were packed on the road, while the students kept on shouting saying that the governments have failed.
One of the students Musa Shehu who spoke to PUNCH stated that many students were kidnapped in the past but no action was taken to rescue them.
“He said, “A lot of students have been kidnapped from this institution but no positive action is taken to rescue them.
“There are some students currently in bandits camp and the authorities are not making any move to rescue them”.
