Gunmen storm Nasarawa community, kill monarch
Unknown gunmen stormed Odu community in the Udege development area in the Nasarawa Local Government Area of Nasarawa State and killed a traditional ruler, Mr. Amos Ewa Obere.
An investigation by The PUNCH, revealed that the unfortunate incident occurred on Friday around 10 pm.
It was gathered that the yet to be identified gunmen, who came in their numbers with sophisticated weapons, stormed Odu community and shot indiscriminately into the air and made the entire inhabitants of the area to scamper for safety.
Our correspondent learnt that the monarch sustained a gunshot wound in his stomach and was immediately rushed to Mararaba Udege General Hospital but died thereafter.
Our correspondent further learnt that the diseased before his untimely death was a retired Assistant Superintendent of Police and also the ward head of his community and other surrounding villages.
An eyewitness said, “When they stormed the community, they went straight to the palace and dragged the traditional ruler out and told him that your days on earth are finished, then they fired bullets into him. Before people could rush down to know what was happening, they had run away.”
Also confirming the incident to our correspondent, the pioneer chairman of Nigeria Union of Journalists in Nasarawa State, Mr. Joel Ogapa, who is from the area, described the incident as unfortunate.
He expressed worry over the high rate of insecurity in Nasarawa Local Government Area, adding that, “I have not been home in the last two years due to the high level of insecurity.”
Several calls to the chairman of Nasarawa LGA, Mr. Mohammed Otto, and the Police Public Relations Officer, Nasarawa State Command, ASP Ramhman Nansel, were not answered neither did they reply to text messages sent to their mobile phones.
