Deputy Senate President, Jibril Calls for Anti-drug Abuse Education in Colleges, Primary Schools

Following a motion sponsored by Sen. Hussaini Babangida Uba during the plenary session on ‘Urgent Need to Address the Menace of Drug Abuse in Nigeria,’ the deputy Senate President, Barau Jibril has called on the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency NDLEA, stakeholders and all meaning Nigerians to join hands to save the future of the youth from the growing menace.

Senator Barau Jibril restated his call on his Social Media page after the day’s plenary session

He wrote: “This issue is of paramount importance, as it directly affects the future of our great nation.

I emphasized that the youth are the backbone of any country, and when a menace like drug abuse negates their lives, it imperils our collective future. The scourge of drug abuse transcends social strata, affecting even those who should be role models, such as celebrities and politicians. It has permeated all spheres of our society.

While the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) is doing commendable work, the motion is a wake-up call to the agency and all stakeholders responsible for addressing this issue. We must take comprehensive and effective action.

One key step is the inclusion of anti-drug abuse education in our school curriculum, starting from primary schools. This will equip our children with the knowledge of the harmful consequences of drug abuse. We should also consider integrating courses on this topic in higher education, as done in countries like the United States.

Our human capital is the bedrock of a thriving economy, and we must protect it from the devastating effects of illicit drugs. It’s a collective responsibility and we must all unite to combat the menace of drug abuse.

Let’s join hands and work together for a drug-free and prosperous Nigeria.
