BREAKING:Nnamdi Kanu’s Lawyer, Bruce Fein Sends Shocking Letter to UN Secretary General, Others

Bruce Fein, the legal counsel in the United States for Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has taken a bold step by reaching out to key figures within the United Nations.

Fein’s advocacy has taken the form of a letter addressed to the UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, the UN Security Council President Nicolas de Riviere, and the President of the United Nations General Assembly, Dennis Francis. In this communication, he makes a compelling case for Nigeria’s expulsion from the UN due to what he describes as consistent breaches of the UN Charter.

Dated March 13, 2024, Fein’s letter details a series of actions by Nigeria that contravene the principles outlined in the United Nations Charter, to which Nigeria is a signatory. Among the violations cited are the execution of environmental activist Ken Saro-Wiwa, who advocated for the Ogoni people, and the alleged ongoing genocide against the Biafrans characterized by widespread atrocities.

Fein emphasizes that the demand for a referendum by Biafrans, led by Nnamdi Kanu, for the potential establishment of an independent Biafra nation is a right protected under the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, specifically Article 19. He points to Article 6 of the United Nations Charter, which allows for the expulsion of any member persistently violating Charter principles, arguing that Nigeria’s actions, including the illegal prosecution of Nnamdi Kanu, fulfill the criteria for expulsion.

The letter brings to light the UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention’s finding from July 20, 2022, which concluded that Nigeria had violated international human rights laws in the extraordinary rendition of Nnamdi Kanu from Nairobi, Kenya, to Abuja, Nigeria. Despite the UN’s directives for Kanu’s immediate release and compensation, Nigeria has disregarded these obligations, keeping Kanu in solitary confinement without medical care or legal counsel.

Fein also references the Nigerian Supreme Court’s acknowledgment of the illegality of Kanu’s extradition but notes the court’s controversial decision that Nigeria could still prosecute him. This, according to Fein, positions Nigeria as a country that operates outside international law norms, able to kidnap and prosecute individuals with impunity.

The letter concludes with a call for the UN General Assembly, Security Council, or Secretary-General to establish a commission of impartial human rights experts to consider Nigeria’s expulsion under Article 6 of the UN Charter. Fein underscores that the UN’s response to this situation will significantly impact its credibility in upholding human rights standards globally.
