Ayu Must Go – PDP Crisis Deepens As Protesters Storm Secretariat, Demand Resignation Of Party Chairman

Members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have on Thursday stormed the national secretariat and demanded the resignation of the Party’s national chairman, Iyorchia Ayu.

Naija News reports that the Rivers state governor, Nyesom Wike demanded that for peace to be restored to the party Ayu has to step down from his position. Ayu, on his part, has stated that he will not be vacating his position until his tenure comes to an end. During an interview with BBC Hausa, the PDP chairman insisted that those who are calling for his resignation were nowhere to be found when he and other founders of the PDP laid its groundwork. He insisted that Atiku’s victory at the presidential primaries does not affect his position as the party chairman. According to him: “I was voted as PDP Chairman for a four-year tenure and I’m yet to complete a year. Atiku’s victory doesn’t affect the Chairman’s position. I won my election based on our party’s constitution. “I didn’t commit any offense I’m only reforming the party so I’m not bothered with all the noises. I know I’m doing my work and I didn’t steal any money so I see no reason for all these talks. When we started PDP, these children were not around. They are children who do not know why we formed the party. We will not allow any individual to destabilize our party.”

Ayu Must Go

Despite the national chairman’s insistence that he will maintain his position, some young members of the PDP have visited the party’s secretariat in protest. Most of the protesters carried placards with inscriptions reading, “Ayu Must Go”, “Ayu must step down”, “We need justice, and fairness for all”, we don’t want Northern PDP, we don’t want southern PDP”, “we have to be united, not divided” and “we don’t want to lose any election in 2023”.
