Lecturer Sues FG Agencies, Media Houses Over Attribution Of Banditry Related Crimes To Fulanis

A self-acclaimed university lecturer identified as Ahmadu Shehu has sued several Federal Government agencies and some media houses in the country over the attribution of banditry-related crime to Fulani.

According to him, he wants a Federal High Court in Abuja to restrain the said media houses in the country and federal government agencies from further attributing banditry-related crime to Fulani.

In the fundamental rights enforcement suit marked: FHC/ABJ/CS/1729/2022, Shehu is claiming among others, that the persistent attribution of acts of banditry and related crimes to Fulani herdsmen was discriminatory.

Naija News reports that the  suit named eight media houses ( Channels Television, Africa Independent Television (AIT), The Guardian newspapers, The people’s Gazette, Vintage Press Ltd, Thisday Newspapers Ltd, African Newspapers of Nigeria Plc and TVC Communications Ltd.) and three federal government agencies, (Office of the Attorney-General of the Federation (OAGF)., National Orientation Agency (NOA) and the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) as respondents.

Shehu, who further claimed as contained in a supporting court document, said that oftentimes government officials have been found making antagonistic statements against the Fulani people.

The acclaimed Fulani lecturer advanced that “All over the country, there are millions of Fulani people who are engaged in legitimate activities either in the Civil Service at the federal, state or local levels, some who are engaged in businesses, living in peace and contributing productively and positively to the well-being of society.

“Many negative, discriminatory and demeaning statements have denied the applicant (Shehu) the requisite recognition, enjoyment or exercise, on an equal footing of his human rights and fundamental freedoms in the political, economic, social, cultural or any other field of public life.

“The branding of Fulani people as ‘Fulani Herdsmen’ or ‘Fulani Bandits’ is indicative of domination of other Nigerian tribes over the Fulani people.

“The Fulani people have a history of peaceful coexistence with other ethnic groups in Nigeria over a period spanning more than 100 years.

“The attribution of violent, gruesome banditry and terrorist attacks by unscrupulous elements to the ethnic identity of the Fulanis have negatively impacted the perception of a reasonable Nigerian of other ethnicities about a person of Fulani origin so that they perceive a common Fulani person as a symbol of violence, gruesome murder, banditry, and terrorism.

“The attribution of violent, gruesome banditry and terrorist attacks by unscrupulous elements to the ethnic identity by the 4th – 12th respondents have denied the unquantifiable amount of persons of Fulani origin, including the applicant, the requisite recognition, enjoyment and/or exercise, on an equal footing of their human rights and fundamental freedoms in the political, economic, social, cultural or any other field of public life.

“The attribution of violent, gruesome banditry and terrorist attacks by unscrupulous elements to the ethnic identity by the 4th – 12th respondents have denied the applicant a lot of business and political opportunities due to the fact that people are hesitant to deal with him because of the negative reporting of the 4th – 12th respondents.

“The description of perpetrators of banditry and terrorist attacks in various parts of Nigeria as ‘Fulani Herdsmen’ or ‘Fulani Bandits’ have infringed on the applicant and Fulanis’ right to protection from unlawful attacks on his honour and reputation,” Shehu submitted.

Naija News also gathered that he mentioned the following as some of the reliefs he sought: “A declaration that the unsubstantiated ascription of bandits and/various parts of Nigeria to people of Fulani extraction and the description of perpetrators of such attacks as “Fulani Herdsmen” and/or “Fulani Bandits” by the 4th – 12th defendants are inordinate, unconscionable, discriminatory and a violation of their right to enjoy all the civil rights recognized and guaranteed by Article 2 of the African Charter on Human and People’s Rights; Article 1 of the International Convention on the Elimination of all Forms of Racial Discrimination; and Article 2 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

“A declaration that the constant albeit unsubstantiated attribution of bandits’ and/or terrorists’ attacks in various parts of Nigeria to people of Fulani extraction, and the description of perpetrators of such attacks as “Fulani Herdsmen” and/or “Fulani Bandits” by the 4th – 12th defendants are a violation of their right to mutual tolerance and respect by his fellow beings without discrimination as enshrined in Article 28 of the African Charter on Human and People’s Rights.

“An order of Perpetual injunction restraining the 4th – 12th defendants, their privies, agents, successors, howsoever described from further attributing any bandits/terrorists’ attack, past or future to the people of Fulani ethnicity.

“An order of this honourable court directing the 4th – 12th respondents to pay the sum of N100,000,00.00 as a compensation/exemplary damages in consonance with Section 46 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and Article 8 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, against the respondents severally and or jointly for violation of the applicant’s fundamental human rights,” the court document stated.

Sequel to the sad news about the death of Ifeanyi David Adeleke, the son of international Nigerian singer, Davido, and his fiancee, Chioma, the Osun state chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has suspended political activities for the week.

Davido, who is the cousin to Osun state’s governor-elect Ademola Adeleke, reportedly lost his son after he drowned in a pool in his Banana Island residence yesterday night in Lagos state.

Naija News reports that the Osun PDP in a statement by Osun Caretaker Chairman of the party, Dr Adekunle Akindele expressed sadness over the incident and prayed with the family for God to console them.

The statement said; “Following the death of Ifeanyi, all party activities are hereby suspended to commiserate with the family of Adeleke.

“We mourn the sorrowful exit of our son, Ifeanyi. We pray for the repose of his soul. It is a sad day but we remain steadfast in our faith in the Lord of the Universe.

“Our condolence goes to Davido, our youth ambassador. We commiserate with our father figure, Dr Deji Adeleke and the entire Adeleke family. We pray the good Lord to grant the family the strength to bear this irreparable loss,” Akindele said.

Aregbesola’s Camp Reveals Presidential Candidate The Minister Will Work For After He Was Left Out Of Tinubu’s Campaign Council

Aregbesola's Camp Reveals Presidential Candidate The Minister Will Work For After He Was Left Out Of APC/Tinubu's Campaign Council

A faction of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Osun State has declared that the Minister of Interior, Rauf Aregbesola deserves to be a part of the party’s presidential campaign council for its candidate, Bola Tinubu.

The faction which enjoys the support of Aregbesola stated that the Minister and Tinubu have a close relationship and the capabilities of Aregbesola also can’t be undermined.

The group however said it was surprised both the APC and Tinubu decided to overlook Aregbesola in the composition of the presidential campaign council.

Notwithstanding, it added that as a true party man, the former Osun State Governor would work and give his best for the success of the APC and its presidential candidate, Tinubu in the forthcoming 2023 elections.

The faction’s publicity secretary, Abiodun Agboola made the stand known during an interview with Punch on Monday.

He said; “Actually, we were surprised that his name was not included in the list when it came out. We don’t know what is responsible for that but we felt that with his closeness to Asiwaju (Bola Tinubu), he was supposed to be given a prominent role in the campaign.

“As a true party man, he will definitely contribute towards the success of Asiwaju during the next election. But we felt that he deserved to be there. He knows Asiwaju very well; he knows him in and out. Asiwaju also knows his capabilities. At a certain point in time, he was the DG of Asiwaju when he was campaigning for the governorship in Lagos State.

“We felt he deserves more, but if the party hierarchy says that he has to come in as a member of the Executive Committee, there must be a reason behind that which is not known to us. He is a party man who is loyal to the party. Ogbeni Aregbesola will definitely play his role during the next election.”

They Have Other Roles

Meanwhile, it would be recalled that the Director General of the All Progressives Congress Presidential Campaign Council, Governor Simon Lalong had previously disclosed that some prominent party leaders who were not included in the Presidential Campaign Council have other roles to play at other levels.

He made the submission following the reactions that greeted the absence of some names on the list.

Lalong emphasized that such persons have different critical roles to play at regional, zonal, state local government, ward, and unit levels.

Five Under-17 Flamingos Who Could Become Great Footballers

Five Under-17 Flamingos Who Could Become Great Footballers

Nigeria’s U-17 Flamingos delivered an impressive performance in the just concluded FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in India which has left Nigerians beating their chest for a bright future in Nigeria’s female football.

One of the few shining moments in a largely disastrous year for Nigerian women’s football was the impressive performance of Nigeria’s under-17 girls.

Naija News recalls that luck has not been on the Super Falcon’s side as they failed to lift their tenth African Cup of Nations title after losing to Morocco in a 5-4 penalty shootout after a 1-1 hard-fought 90 minutes.

Prior to their shambolic display, the nine-time Africa champions also failed to qualify for the rescheduled 2021 Olympics in Tokyo, Japan.

Naija News highlights a few Flamingos players who have demonstrated they have what it takes to thrive and compete at the highest level in the upcoming years.

Opeyemi Ajakaye (Forward):

In the recently concluded U-17 world cup, Opeyemi Ajakaye, who the football community has dubbed the “new Asisat Oshoala” due to her attacking threat, won three player of the match awards. After her impressive performance, the 16-year-old is without a doubt going places in the football world and for her country.

Taiwo Afolabi (Midfielder):

Everyone should keep a close eye on Afolabi’s control of the midfield as she is one of the tournament’s breakout stars and her stunning goal against New Zealand was a contender for the goal of the tournament. The youngster, if followed by the right development project, has what it takes to establish herself as the Falcons’ main midfielder.

Miracle Usani (Defender):

Usani is a player who deserves close attention after having a strong performance in India. She was tasked with marking the American forward Onyeka Gorero, who is of Nigerian descent, and she did a fantastic job with it.

Faith Omilana (Goalkeeper):

Chiamaka Nnadozie will likely remain the Falcons’ starting goalkeeper, but Omilana is a player to keep an eye on after making some crucial saves during the tournament’s match against the USA. The youngster will undoubtedly give Nigerian managers something to consider as she develops.

Omowunmi Bello (Forward):

Bello’s presence was a nightmare for rival teams at the U-17 women’s world cup, and will soon rise to the top. The Flamingos’ attacking plays always included the forward, who has become one of India’s biggest surprises.

‘No Cause For Alarm’ – Presidency Dismisses Possible Terror Attacks In Abuja

'No Cause For Alarm' - Presidency Dismisses Possible Terror Attacks In Abuja

The Presidency has again reassured Nigerians to go about their lawful businesses as the country is safe and secure.

Naija News reports that the Senior Special Assistant to President Muhammadu Buhari on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, gave the reassurance in an interview with The Punch on Monday.

Shehu said the security situation in Nigeria does not warrant travel advisories and terror warnings from the United States (US), the United Kingdom (UK), and other foreign countries.

The presidential spokesman said Buhari’s assurance to Nigerians remained firm and would continue to ensure that the country is safe for all.

He stated, “We had a security council meeting today. The NIA and CDS Lucky Irabor addressed the media after the security meeting. Most importantly, the President has addressed the issue and assured Nigerians already.”

This comes hours after the National Security Adviser, Maj Gen Babagana Monguno (retd.) said Nigerians are not in danger and there was no imminent attack on Abuja.

Monguno said this on Monday after the emergency meeting of the National Security Council summoned by President Muhammadu Buhari at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

The NSA said any exaggerated sense of insecurity, any hype about the disintegration of our security forces, and intelligence agencies is unfounded.

He, therefore, advised Nigerians to go about their lives, adding that the security agencies are putting measures in place to forestall any attack.

He stated, “We just concluded a sitting, an emergency meeting of the National Security Council, which was held at the behest of Mr President. We have just concluded the meeting and the meeting basically, was to discuss recent happenings within the FCT and certain declarations and alerts coming from various quarters, insinuating growing insecurity and threat to security within the FCT and environments.

“In rounding off, I will like to first and foremost, assure all the citizens of this country that any exaggerated sense of insecurity, any hype about the disintegration of our security forces, and intelligence agencies, is unfounded. I want to assure Nigerians that so far, the situation has been under control, and the intelligence and security agencies have made a lot of arrests. They are evaluating and exploiting all the materials in their possession.’’

Speaking further, Monguno said, “We are not in the habit of disclosing whatever has been done but the most important thing is that from the time this story started emerging until now, about a week to 10 days, you can see that so far the situation has been brought under control.

“The issue of Nigerians being made to panic is unnecessary. The situation in various areas of the Federal Capital Territory, the situation has been brought under control and we’re trying as much as possible to work with our neighbours and within the domestic situation, to work with our foreign partners responsibly, without giving the impression that Nigeria is skating on thin ice and we are about to implode; that I will want to dispel any illusion about any heightened sense of insecurity.

‘’It is false, it is irresponsible for anybody to give that signal. We are working with our foreign partners in a responsible way and Nigerians should go about their normal daily undertakings without being put in a situation of fear.”

Nobody Made Akintoye Mouthpiece Of Yoruba Race – Keyamo Reacts To Allegation Against Tinubu

Keyamo Reacts To Senate’s Probe On Creation Of 774,000 Jobs

The Chief Spokesperson of the All Progressives Congress Presidential Campaign Council, Festus Keyamo, has denied claim that the party’s presidential candidate, Bola Tinubu, was planning to sabotage the Yoruba Nation self-determination struggle movement.

Keyamo was reacting to an allegation made by the leader of Ilana Omo Oodua, Professor Banji Akintoye, that Tinubu was using some members of the movement to destroy the struggle for Yoruba Nation because of his presidential ambition.

The Minister of State for Labour and Employment also refuted Akintoye’s accusation that Tinubu is seeking to destroy the Yoruba self-determination struggle by using some members of the movement.

Keyamo stated that he doesn’t know if the former Governor of Lagos State would be attending the World Congress of Ilana Omo Oodua scheduled to hold today in Ibadan.

The minister warned the professor to stop acting as the mouthpiece of the Yoruba race, saying nobody made the spokesperson for the people of the South West.

He said, “The itinerary of Asiwaju that I have for tomorrow is the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry. I cannot confirm if he is attending the World Congress of Ilana Omo Oodua today at Ibadan.

“Are the Yoruba a group of people who arrogate to themselves the leadership status? When did the Yoruba gather to elect some of these characters?

“I speak authoritatively because I am also Yoruba and I have a right to be Afenifere with any Yoruba group. That is because my mother is a full-blooded Yoruba woman, a princess of the throne in Ilaro. I am an Egbado man myself. My first cousin is the Olu of Ilaro. I can confidently claim to be part of Afenifere.

“All I am trying to tell you is that the Yoruba have not appointed any of such characters to speak on behalf of the Yoruba race.”

Tinubu Sponsoring Our Members To Discredit Our Movement – Akintoye

Why Tinubu's Presidency Can't Stop Yoruba Nation Agitation - Akintoye

The leader of Ilana Omo Oodua, Professor Banji Akintoye, has accused the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress(APC), Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, of using some members of the group to destroy the movement.

In a statement on Monday, Akintoye said Tinubu is attempting to destroy the movement and other other serious self-determination organizations in Yoruba Land because of his presidential ambition.

Akintoye said he did not authorize a congress of the apex body of Yoruba self-determination struggle scheduled to take place today in Ibadan on Tuesday, November 1.

Akintoye said that the people planning the congress are agents of Nigerian politicians within the struggle, alleging that Tinubu is currently recruiting some power-seeking individuals within the movement to either discredit him or destroy the movement completely.

He, therefore, refuted the claim by Funmi Soyemi, the outgoing Chairman of Ilana Interim Management Committee of the organisation that a World Congress of Ilana Omo Oodua would hold tomorrow in Ibadan.

He said, ”The people planning the congress are few agents of Nigerian politicians within the struggle. Bola Tinubu, the Presidential Candidate of the ruling All Progressives Congress is currently recruiting some power-seeking individuals within the self-determination struggle to either discredit me or destroy the movement completely.

“I am sending out this short message to all Yoruba People worldwide that I did not authorize any meeting of Ilana Omo Oodua to be held tomorrow at Ibadan, Oyo-State. Those behind the gathering are few people working for Nigerian politicians who are determined to discredit our noble struggle.

“I hereby dissociate myself from such a gathering and I want the whole world to know the meeting is illegal, unauthorized and unknown to Ilana Omo Oodua Worldwide thus whatever resolutions reached at the meeting is null and void.

“The characters behind the rumored meeting are individuals who are more interested in holding offices and positions within the self-determination struggle than fighting to restore the stolen sovereignty of our people.

“Also, Bola Tinubu has threatened to destroy Ilana Omo Oodua and other serious self-determination organizations in Yoruba Land because we told him that he is merely after his personal interest and not the interest of the Yoruba people.

“Therefore, I urge you all to ignore all his agents within our system and be more focused in our struggle for freedom and liberation.”
