A Northerner Will Replace Ayu If He Resigns – Former PDP Secretary

A former National Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Emmanuel Agbo, on Tuesday, claimed that a northerner would take over if Iyorchia Ayu decides to resign as the National Chairman of the party.

According to Agbo, the Deputy National Chairman of the party from the North East, Umar Damagun will take over from Ayu. Agbo stated this during an interview on Arise TV in his reaction to the crisis rocking the main opposition party. The former PDP secretary said a northerner has to takeover over from Ayu based on the constitution of the party. The presidential candidate of the party, Atiku Abubakar and the Governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike and his allies over time have been at loggerheads. The camp of Governor Wike in their request to support the presidential ambition of Atiku called for Ayu to resign from office. Governor Wike’s camp is against Northerners taking over major positions in the party ahead of the 2023 general elections. Agbo, speaking on the crisis in the party, said, “35 subsections 3 of the PDP constitution says that in the event of willful resignation, incapacitation or death of any officer, say, now the national chairman as the case is, the deputy national chairman from the zone in which he comes, takes over. “If Ayu resigns today, the person to assume his office is Umar from the North East. And Umar is not only from the North, but he’s from the North East where our presidential candidate comes from. “They are calling for his (Ayu’s) resignation… There are constitutional impediments to this call.”
