2023: Why I Resigned As PDP BoT Chairman - Jibrin

The former Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Board of Trustees, Senator Walid Jibrin, has disclosed his reason for resigning from the position.

Recall that Jibrin announced his resignation at the 97th National Executive Council (NEC) meeting held in Abuja on Thursday. In his speech at the meeting, Jibrin said he resigned from his position to ensure that the party’s presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, emerges as the next president of Nigeria in 2023. The former BoT chairman said he discussed his resignation with the former Vice President and he agreed with his decision to restore peace to the party. Jiibrin, however, said he had been promised a bigger position if Atiku wins the forthcoming presidential election. He said: “All we want to ensure is that Atiku becomes the president of Nigeria by all means. That is why I decided to step down from the BoT. And I discussed this with the candidate and the candidate agrees with me. If the party wins I will be given a bigger position.” Jibrin was, therefore, replaced by a former President of the Senate, Adolphus Wabara. Jibrin’s resignation came amidst the internal crisis rocking the party since the emergence of Atiku as the party’s 2023 presidential candidate with the Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike who was defeated at the May primaries in Abuja, feeling cheated. The Rivers governor, however, has been making demands, chief among which is the resignation of the national chairman, Iyorchia Ayu as a condition for peace. All attempts made so far to resolve the crisis have not yielded positive results.
